Meet Araucano

Araucano is one of the original females we purchased in 2002

Cria

Name: Araucano

ARI#: 813588

Birthdate: February 1, 1999

What is with the weird official name? Araucano's mother (QAI2 CAMILA IMPORTY98) was pregnant with Araucano when Camila was imported to the United States. The year was 1998, indicated by part of their names. Soon after, the North American borders were closed to importations.

Aruacano was very fearful of people when she first came to live with us. She probably learned this from her mother, who was probably not handled much until she went through the trauma of importation. And until our farm, Araucano had been on pretty big farms. I'm sure is was a shock to come here with Embrace as her only alpaca companion. I spent a lot of time just standing in their pen when I fed them, not even trying to touch the alpacas at first. Slowly, I was able to touch Araucano, then rub her while she ate. Eventually, she grew less cautious of me, but was always very aware of her surroundings. She was the alpha alpaca here until Vagabond took over the job when he arrived. She is also a very intellegent alpaca - which she passed on to her offspring.

In the fall of 2006, a farm visitor fell in love with Araucano's cria Me Linda Chaquita, who was only a couple months old at that time. Just before Christmas of that year, Araucano and Me Linda were delived to Dancing Bear fishing resort in Northern Minnesota, also home of JackPot! Alpacas. I'm not sure how they feel about the 'permanent vacation' of living at a resort, but I know they are loved and well cared-for there.
