Spinning at the country school

Posted June 16th, 2010 by Teresa and filed in Uncategorized

Yesterday morning I packed up my spinning wheel and some fiber and drove a few miles that took me back several decades.   I went to the Kragero School to be part of the Community Education class called Life in the Past Lane.   It was so fun to see the girls in dresses and bonnets.  I talked a little about alpacas and their fiber – showing some samples of fiber and hand spun yarn…

…but mostly I talked about spinning and knitting and how long it must have taken to make clothes before everything was available at stores.  I spent some time spinning and gave many a chance to try spinning.  Some caught on quickly, but most were pretty sure they would not have many things to wear if they had to spin and knit just to get a new pair of socks!

Accomplishments on retreat

First – I knit these 2 pair of mittens.

They will be finished by another gal in my knitting group.  I have a total of 7 pair to turn over to her tomorrow at our monthly meeting.

Last weekend was my spinning guild’s retreat at the Linden Hills mansion.  I spun and knit and ate and relaxed.  It was awesome.  I spun this huge skein from the fiber of Ruby.

After steaming, the hat will get ear flaps added.  The mittens need to be felted yet.

While on the retreat, I seamed the wristwarmers and mittens, knit the scarf and started the hat.   The hat will be blue with brown stripes.

The hat will be an ear flap hat.  These mittens will also be felted.  These 2 sets are part of a custom order.

Here’s my newest addition to my Etsy store.

Happy New Year to all

I know – a few days late!  But the year is still new – and I wish for everyone to have a wonderful 2010!

I am so grateful to the Geek Squad at the Best Buy store in Rogers, MN.  They did an awesome job of finding my data and moving it to my new PC.  I’m still discovering missing software (they can’t move that), but am slowing getting that all back on too.

Here is the cute little hat I made in December.

I did finish a hat for her brother too, but no photo.  Shawl was finished before Christmas.  Yay!

January started with a visit by a group of Moms and their kids .  They had a little classroom session where they learned about alpacas and saw fiber in various stages.   Then they split into two groups, half going to the barn with Darryl to visit the alpacas, half inside to do a little shopping.  But before they left, they had their picture taken in front of the alpaca pen.

I’m nearly done with a pair of legwarmers, and then have my January orders to fill.  Hope to dye the yarn for the first  set of scarf, mittens & wristwarmers today!   I’ve also been spinning some yarn from Ruby’s fiber!  I saw someone wearing a hat the other day that is just a tube with a drawstring at the top.  I made one a few years ago.  I think I’ll try another from Ruby’s yarn.  And I must get something done for my Wednesday post of charity knitting.

The temperatures here have been brutal lately.   But I just looked outside and the alpacas are eating hay from the outside bunk!   I’ve been spoiled with Darryl home to do chores during the Holidays.  But this morning was a rude awakening to the cold!  We just signed up for an alpaca show in April, so I will have to start some training soon.   The boys (Sonny and Rolly) will need to be registered and weaned, too.

December what??

That’s what I keep thinking every time I look at a calendar.  I can’t believe Christmas is nearly here.  I’m not at all ready!  No gifts bought, no cards or letter ready to send out, no decorations.   It’s not that I don’t want to do all those things, but I really would rather knit and weave and spin!  And so I have been.

I’ve got hats nearly done for a brother and sister – custom ordered by their mom.  The young girl chose her style and colors – light green and violet.  I think I may steal the combo and try dyeing some yarn in those colors.  The son’s hat is blue and gray.  I hope to finish both week.

I also have a shawl on the loom – again, to be finished this week and mailed in time for Christmas.   It is coming along nicely.   I have yarn dyed for a pair of gray men’s mittens – to be picked up on Saturday!

Can I do it?  I think so.  Darryl has plans tonight after work – which includes someone else feeding him!  (Yay – no cooking!)  And tomorrow he will come home for supper and then head off to a meeting.

I also want to tell you about a new boutique in town.  Delightful Day Boutique  just opened in Becker.  If you are ever in the area, you need to check it out.  Local artists and  crafters have things for sale there, as well as gently used kids and maternity clothes.  New things are still being added.  Get a sneak peak on the website.  You can find our felting kits  there and I’m proud to have them there.  It is always nice to  have new place to shop and support the local folks.

And a confession – I have nearly killed my desktop computer.  It has so much STUFF on it, that it can barely move!  The worst is my pictures.  But that is also where I have the software that I use to crop and compress my images, so for at a while, I’ll try blogging from my laptop and not including many pictures.   My New Year’s Resolution is to remove the bad photos (fuzzy, repeats, etc) and then move some to another storage place.    So hang in there – I’m taking the pictures and will get them on some day!

December what?  16th?  No way!  I gotta get a move on!

Farm Tour Review

Posted October 1st, 2009 by Teresa and filed in Uncategorized

Farm Tour is over for 2009.  I’m already thinking of next year.  It is a busy, crazy, fun weekend.  We had lots of visitors, pretty good sales and some interest in raising alpacas.

Feeding the alpacas was also a hit – for visitors of all ages.

The fiber projects were a hit.

But now, I’m on a mission to build up inventory and complete the custom orders I have in the queue.   My next show is on Halloween in my hometown of Braham.   This is a new show – starting this year.  I’m hoping for a good crowd of people ready to start Christmas shopping!  But I need to do my part.   So far, I’ve ordered more yarn to knit and more soap to felt!  And I’ve set some inventory goals.
